Changing Our Definitions of Success Over Time

Our businesses go through so many seasons of change, which means our definition of success can shift with time. In Kiwi’s business, she’s been through many seasons of change from owning a storefront to closing it, then growing her team to scaling back away from business. These shifts are common, but also come with a lot of emotion and guilt.

Stepping Back from Business & Overcoming Money Mindsets

Last year, Kiwi bought a home and began renovations on it. In order to focus on those renovations, Kiwi decided to take some time away from work. The fears of cash flow and abandoning the success she’d built for her business all these years, along with the guilt she felt were so strong in the beginning that it was an emotional time.

Even considering the money mindsets that come with it of knowing how much work it takes to make money, then turning around and spending that money on other things hindered her from wanting to take that time off. Whether you have personal projects, life experiences, or just need to take a break mentally from your business, knowing that limit is important.

It's really easy to hear someone say you need to take a break or recognize that you’re burnt out, but it's such a multi-faceted experience. Taking a break isn't always going to feel like a break because there's always so many other emotional and psychological factors that go into taking a break.

Whether you’re worried about hurting the growth or reputation you’ve spent years building, maybe financial security is keeping you from taking the break, or even your own insecurities that come with giving yourself space, it’s not as easy to do as it is to say..

When we do take the time to step away, the majority of us do come back with a fresh perspective and a little more confidence in ourselves and our work.

Your Emotions Make Your Business Stronger

Considering the emotions that come with stepping away from your business and taking a break, emotions in general are so valuable for you and your business.

Building a business is one of the most intimate things you can do with yourself, because you're constantly digging in deeper and deeper to figure yourself out. You’ll find that you’re redefining your success often, you’re restructuring your business to serve you better, and sometimes you’re taking breaks to help you serve yourself.

Confronting your emotions and accepting them gives you the power to build a stronger business. When you dive into what your emotions mean when it comes to your business, you’re forced to do better in your business, which ultimately strengthens that business.

If you’re battling a variety of emotions inside your business, this is your encouragement to face them head on. These emotions open the path to clarity, which enables us to align ourselves as a human, with ourselves as a business owner. Then we can align with all of the other hats that we wear in our lives: friend, partner, parent, etc. Additionally, it allows you to reflect on your why—why are you doing this, what were your intentions with starting this business, and what impact does your business have on your life.
