Today’s episode was prompted by Proof to Product LABS member, Jennifer, who says,
Hi Katie, I have followed the online trainings here in LABS for building my dream team. You suggest tracking time to see how and what you can delegate. When I am busy, like I am now, working on product development, I drop everything else. I haven't been on IG for over a month, emails have been scarce, and I haven't touched my bank statements. If I follow the steps you suggest and track my time. Tracking would show that I spend all of my time on product development. I feel like I could add several team members but I am afraid of adding to my expenses and I’m also overwhelmed with the time it would to train someone. I’m worried it wouldn't pay off. I don't know where to start. Can you help me figure this out?”

Reducing Overwhelm in Your Business

So many product-based business owners feel this sense of push and pull when their business begins to do well. They’re selling more products, trying to grow and expand, yet they only have so much time to manage every aspect of their business. One way to reduce that overwhelm and stress is through hiring team members and delegating tasks in the business.

Hiring & Delegating in Your Business

There are two ways to approach hiring and delegating in your business:

  • Look at what the business needs and prioritizing tasks that will have the biggest impact.

  • Look at what you need and your capacity as a CEO

Let’s walk through a few roles you could consider hiring for and delegating tasks in your business, based on Jennifer’s prompt for today’s episode.

Accountants, Bookkeepers, & Financials

Understanding our numbers as an entrepreneur and having up to date financial records helps us make better, more informed decisions within our business. If you’re falling behind on the numbers and bookkeeping, it may be time to hire someone to handle that for you, like a bookkeeper or accountant. The benefits of hiring someone to manage this for you include always having up to date profit and loss statements, which will help you make more thoughtful and strategic decisions. You can easily bring on an experienced contractor to avoid training, plus most will charge a flat fee, making it easy to budget for throughout the year. Inside of our LABS community, we often lean on each other for recommendations!

Copywriter

When our brand is more visible to customers, our sales volume and frequency increase. This is why it’s so important to stay active in our marketing efforts, like email and social media. If you’re struggling to keep up with all of the copy needed in your business, it may be time to hire a copywriter, either in a contract role or by project.

If you’re just getting started with your marketing strategy, I would recommend beginning with your email welcome sequence and set that up first. Then you can move into having them write your ongoing marketing emails for you. After that, you can repurpose some of that content into social media captions or hire someone to manage that for you as well.

Studio or Production Assistant

Once you’ve designed your product, there are a variety of additional tasks that have to be completed before your product goes to market. This could include designing the packaging, ordering supplies, submitting orders to production, processing through quality check, posting new products to the website, and fulfilling and shipping orders. This role will require a bit of training to ensure things are done to your standards, but it will be so worth it. If you need access to a job description for a production assistant, customer support, or wholesale manager, you can grab these inside of our LABS community!

Your Next Step to Hiring & Delegating

If you’re in the same place as Jennifer and want to bring in help, but are worried about budget and time, this is your encouragement to focus on bringing in help for strategic areas that won’t require too much of your resources yet will make an impact. As a recap, you can start by looking at project based work or important ongoing tasks that you know the business needs to operate in order to sustain and grow its revenue.
