240 | You're right on time with Amber McCue, The Modern CEO

Do things in your life or business feel like they just aren’t happening fast enough? So many of us experience this year after year, but what if we could shift our mindsets to turn it into a positive? Amber McCue of The Modern CEO joins us to share how after experiencing this guilty feeling of things not happening fast enough, she opted for the mindset of “Right on time.”

No matter where you are in your business or life, you’re right on time. She’s sharing philosophies on releasing control, remaining flexible, and checking in with ourselves and our business when making big decisions. Listen in as she shares how valuable setting intentions multiple times a year is in her business.

Embracing the Right on Time

Back in 2014, Amber started sharing this mindset of being right on time in her business and with her clients. Whether someone was running late or missed a meeting, rather than jumping to the anger that can come with that experience, she opted to say, “You’re right on time.”

There is always something happening in life that we don’t always know about or plan for. While she spent years sharing this phrase with her clients, in 2017, she realized that she wasn’t following this concept for herself. She spent the next few months learning lessons about being right on time.

In 2018, as her family was preparing to move to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, she was informed that they were not moving. In her empty home with just 8 suitcases, she had to find another plan—hopping from AirBnBs to hotels. After 8 moves, around Annapolis, they moved in late summer to Ethiopia.

Little did they know that these months of playing the waiting game, they were moving to a place known for never being on time—a place they were all too familiar with. Now they’ve embraced this concept of knowing where they want to go, not knowing how they’ll get there, and just living “right on time.”

Navigating Right on Time as a Business in COVID

When COVID first hit, Amber and her family had unexpectedly relocated to Chicago. Two weeks after moving was when businesses started to be impacted by the restrictions that came with COVID. That’s when she started to encourage other business owners to learn how to grow and test in these trying times.

For her photography business, this meant they wanted to scale. So during the lockdown, Amber’s team expanded into 10 cities with the intention of shooting once everything reopened. They had great systems and structures to build out the additional cities, planned for growth, and did virtual training during those four months.

Additionally, they set up virtual photoshoots to help create income for her team.

With each of these investments of time and money, there was quite a bit of risk involved. That risk allowed her growth in the business. By adding those ten cities, they were able to exceed their 2019 revenue in 2020 even with a four month shut down. Since then, in 2021, they tripled their 2019 revenue and added ten more cities.

Setting Intentions & Choosing a Word of the Year

Every year Amber sets a word of the year, then sets intentions multiple times a year. This year, her word came to her during a retreat with The Modern CEO—Expand.

While reading Seed of the Soul, she comes across a chapter about expanding in personal growth and as humans. When we expand and allow others to expand, we can’t do all the things nor do things for others that they need to do.

When it comes to setting your intentions this year, make sure you’re embracing the Right on Time approach.
